Application of GUT Matrix in the assessment of pathological manifestations in heritage constructions

Abstract

The present paper presents the application of GUT (Gravity, Urgency, Tendency) Matrix methodology as a tool in the assessment of pathological manifestations in buildings. Three heritage constructions of the historic center of Sobral, Ceará, Brazil were studied through in situ inspections, photographic records and elaboration of the damage map. The GUT Matrix was used as a tool to rank, in each building, priority levels for each damage in order to define their order of treatment. Thus, it was possible to conclude that the applied method can be used as a useful tool to manage the maintenance of buildings through prioritization of the most significant problems and, to contribute directly to the preservation and safety of the built historical heritage.

Isaías Carlos Braga, Department of Civil Engineering, UVA, Sobral, Brazil.

Isaías C. Braga received the Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering by State University of  Vale do Acaraú (UVA) in 2017 and currently he is professor at UVA and works as civil engineer. His research fields are: structural analysis and building pathology.

Francisco da Silva Brandão, Civil Engineering Graduate Program-PPGEC/UFRGS and LAREB/UFC, Porto Alegre, Brazil.
Francisco da Silva Brandão received the Technical License in Electrotechnology by Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Ceará (IFCE) in 2012, the bachelor degree in Civil Engineering by State University of  Vale do Acaraú (UVA) in 2017 and the certification programme in Engineering and Maintenance Management by Faculdade Única de Ipatinga (FUNIP) in 2018. Currently he is master's student in Civil Engineering/Structures at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGEC/UFRGS) and member of the Laboratory of Rehabilitation and Buildings Durability (LAREB/UFC). His research fields are: earthquake engineering, dynamic identification of structures, structural analysis and building pathology.
Francisco Roger Carneiro Ribeiro, Civil Engineering Graduate Program/Unisinos and LAREB/UFC, São Leopoldo, Brasil.
Francisco Roger C. Ribeiro received the Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering by State University of  Vale do Acaraú (UVA) in 2018 and currently he is master's student in Civil Engineering/Building construction at University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (PPGEC/Unisinos) and member of the Laboratory of Rehabilitation and Buildings Durability (LAREB/UFC). His research fields are: Construction materials, building pathology and waste management.
Aldecira Gadelha Diógenes, GEM/UVA, Department of Civil Engineering, UVA, Sobral, Brazil.

Aldecira Gadelha Diógenes received the bachelor degree in Civil Engineering by University of Fortaleza in 2007, and the M.Sc. Degree in Civil Engineering in 2011 from Federal University of Ceará. She is Assistant Professor at Universidade Estadual Vale do Acaráu, Brazil and PhD Student at Federal University of Ceará. She has experience in materials characterization and structural analysis, and she current research interests include structural health monitoring, structural risk assessment, strengthening and
repair of existing structures and built heritage conservation.
